نتایج یک پژوهش انجام شده در کشور تایوان نشان می دهد که چای سبز، خطر ابتلا به سرطان ریه در افراد سیگاری را کاهش می دهد. در این کشور، سرطان ریه علت اصلی مرگ و میر ناشی از سرطان ها است. مصرف چای به خصوص چای سبز به دلیل داشتن آنتی اکسیدان های قوی از ایجاد سلول های سرطانی و تشکیل تومور پیشگیری می کند.
در این پژوهش 170 بیمار مبتلا به سرطان ریه و 340 فرد سالم به عنوان گروه شاهد وارد مطالعه شدند. در این مطالعه مواردی مثل سیگار کشیدن، مصرف چای سبز، رژیم غذایی حاوی میوه و سبزی و سابقه ی خانوادگی سرطان ریه در پرسشنامه هایی ثبت شد. در این پژوهش همچنین فاکتورهای رشد شبه انسولین IGF1، IGF2 و IGFBP3 که با خطر ابتلا به سرطان در ارتباط هستند نیز گزارش شد.
نتایج این پژوهش نشان داد، میان افراد سیگاری و غیرسیگاری، خطر ابتلا به سرطان ریه در افرادی که چای سبز مصرف نمی کردند، 5 برابر بیش از افرادی بود که روزانه حداقل یک فنجان چای سبز می نوشیدند. در میان افراد سیگاری هم خطر ابتلا به سرطان ریه در افرادی که چای سبز مصرف نمی کردند 12/7 برابر بیش از افرادی بود که روزانه حداقل یک فنجان چای سبز می نوشیدند. افراد سیگاری که حامل ژنوتیپ های مستعد IGF1، IGF2 و IGFBP3 بودند هم در مقایسه با افراد غیر سیگاری حاملِ این ژنوتیپ ها، بیشتر در معرض ابتلا به سرطان ریه بودند.
نتایج این پژوهش نشان می دهد که احتمال ابتلا به سرطان ریه در افراد سیگاری با مصرف چای سبز کاهش می یابد.
